Insider Software Extends Font Auto-Activation in FontAgent Pro

The Mac version of FontAgent Pro has new font auto-activation plugins for Adobe CS3, as well as updated XTensions for QuarkXPress 7 and plugins for Adobe CS2.
Available in Desktop, Workgroup and Connected Editions, FontAgent Pro is designed specifically for creatives who require a font-management system that integrates diagnostics, repair utilities, font-selection capabilities, font book creation features and design tools. The package includes support for multiple font libraries, cascading sets for job and project management, and a Font Player that provides interactive real-time font selection tools. Multiple startup sets can be configured and fonts can be auto-activated without launching FontAgent Pro, while administrative tools include the ability to permit modifications to libraries and sets only if approved by the administrator.

The new software includes auto-activation plugins for Adobe Creative Suite 3, including InDesign, Illustrator and what the developer claims are the only auto-activation solutions available for Photoshop. In addition, the release includes updated XTensions for QuarkXPress 6, 6.5 and 7. FontAgent Pro auto-activation plugins now support all versions of Mac OS X, including Panther, Tiger and Leopard, as well as Classic applications.
The plugins can be downwloaded by FontAgent Pro users on the Insider Software site.

Exportools Professional 2 Available for QuarkXPress

The Mac XTension provides batch output of XPress documents as single-page files.
Badia Software's Exportools Professional is designed for those who need to frequently export XPress documents in a range of formats, a process that is typically time-consumaing and fraught with error. The XTension lets users choose any number of XPress documents and then generates the required files in EPS, PostScript, PDF, GIF, JPEG, HTML or text format. The smart name composition engine makes it possible to specify variable placeholders, such as page or serial numbers, which change automatically to name each exported file. To aid organization, Exportools Professional has the option to automatically create subfolders with variable names.
The XTension can also be configured to open each of the exported files with any application, and keeps track of the 50 most recently accessed applications. Further customization options include the suppression of error messages, outputting as spreads and inclusion of all layouts for all documents.

Exportools Professional 2 is Universal Binary and requires QuarkXPress 7 and Mac OS X Tiger or Leopard. It is available for purchase on the Badia Software site or from distributors such as XChange International.

FontShop International Releases FF Meta Serif

The serif version provides a long-awaited accompaniment to FF Meta.
The creation of what was to become FF Meta is well-covered in the recently-published Made with FontFont, (Mark Batty Publishers). At that time the font was designed for a large corporate client, but when it failed to be finally put into use, a version of the font eventually became one of the early public releases of its creator, Erik Spiekermann, one of the founders of FontFont. An instant hit, and perennial favorite, it has been without a sans equivalent.
The creation of FF Meta Serif apparently required the work of Spiekermann and two other designers over a three-year period. The result is a face with metrics that are not mathematically identical to FF Meta, but are optically the same. As a result, the two families can be mixed in the same line and can be used to accentuate each other. FF Meta Serif is available in Book, Medium, Bold and Black weights, each with Italics. All styles include Small Caps, lining and oldstyle figures in proportional and tabular widths, and a range of arrows and other symbols. The OpenType versions provide easy access to all available glyphs and features such as extra ligatures, case-sensitive punctuation, and support for Eastern European languages.

ComparePSD Released for Photoshop File Comparison

The new Windows tool is designed to speed finding the right file among many similar ones.

When working with complex Photoshop files that often contain many layers, or that require many steps to complete, the flattening of layers is often required before additional manipulations. Designers typically create multiple copies of such files by saving before each flattening, so they have a copy of the unflattened layer, if required later. However, how to locate the desired imagery amongst the resulting collection of similarly-named files, short of opening each one and poking through them?

PixelNovel, known until now for its free Mac Flikrshop Photoshop plugin for posting directly to Flikr, has released its ComparePSD utility for comparing two files side by side and displaying differences. It provides a layer-by-layer comparison of the files by highlighting mismatching layers and effects in red, with a preview area that lets users zoom in and out of both files simultaneously. Although a Mac version is under development, currently ComparePSD is available only for Windows and takes advantage of that environment by providing the option to select the desired PSD files directly in Windows Explorer.

ComparePSD can be purchased on the PixelNovel site for $29.95. A trial version is also available for download.
